Using street theatre to open up conversations about student well-being

On 10th September A Nukkad Naatak (Street Play) was performed at K.R. Mangalam University by the theatre group Project Vyom in collaboration with Sangath’s Saathi Support Team.
The play, titled “Suno… Main Theek Hoon”, showcased relatable student experiences exploring the emotional and social challenges usually faced by college students. Through enacted scenarios of students struggling with academic stress, high family expectations, problems in friendships or relationships, self-doubt, loneliness and the pressure to appear “fine,” the performance highlighted how students may hide their distress and refuse to seek help out of fear of judgement. The play ended by emphasizing that one should feel empowered to, rather than ashamed of seeking support.
The performers encouraged students to recognise the importance of tending to their own mental wellbeing and introduced Saathi Support as a free, confidential, accessible and non-judgemental peer-support programme. They explained how through Saathi Support one can have sessions with trained student peers who provide a safe space to talk, unpack challenges, and develop practical behavioural coping skills that can be applied in real life.
At the same time, informative material like postcards and bookmarks were handed out to students witnessing the play by the student campus ambassadors and volunteers who briefly explained how one can sign up for Saathi Support through the linked QR code. After the performance, several students came up to the team to enquire further about signing up, either as help seekers or as peer supporters (Saathis).
Ultimately, the event highlighted the effectiveness of creative engagement as a tool to pique interest and visibility in students and encourage participation in wellbeing initiatives. Following a successful showcase at KRMU, Saathi Support x Project Vyom plans to bring the play to campuses across Delhi-NCR.
